A life worth celebrating

Elias’ birthday is always tricky because it is just two days before Christmas. We try hard every year to give him a separate celebration instead of lumping it with Christmas, since both occasions are equally special and deserve individual attention. We have done rather well actually – having done a themed party for five out of the ten birthdays he had (although one of the party was cancelled because he fell sick).

This year, however, we were quite unprepared. We did not complete our Christmas shopping before we went on the KL-CH trip so we barely had time to finish getting presents, especially for the boys and especially for Elias. I was also very tired after the trip, so we did not manage to get a cake for him till the afternoon of the actual day.  We did not get a chance to do the cake-cutting in the afternoon and due to a family dinner (which was lots of fun and ended late), we only managed to reach home at 11:30pm.

So we celebrated Elias’ birthday at 11:40pm, 20 minutes before it is over. We did it, despite the lateness of the hour.  It is precious to us, although it is a simple celebration.

We always celebrate the birthday of everyone of us in the family.  The celebration is important to us because of many reasons.  We do it to create memories and to make the person feel special.  But every birthday celebration is precious to us mainly because of the preciousness of the life behind that celebration.

A child’s life is precious because it is a seed.  We celebrate the growth of that seed, and the fruits that the seed will one day bear forth.  I see in my child, not just a 10 year old, but a life to be celebrated now and for what it will bring.

Happy birthday Elias. You make us happy.  ~ Elisa
