The Ultimate Hawker Fest

We have been volunteers with Touch Community Services (TCS) since the children were little.

Take the City Walk! (Although Samuel was pushed…)
This was in 2007 and Samuel was not even 1 year old yet! 🙂

We are not the very hardworking, consistent type of volunteer who give tuition to needy students every Saturday, or who bring the elderly for medical appointments 2-3 times a week.

We are the adhoc type who participate in their walkathons, flag days and dinner outings for the elderly.  In 2008 my mother, Elias and I even participated in the National Day Parade as a three-generation family representing TCS in saying the pledge.
This was in 2008 and that is Edmund and I.
We brought the elderly from Touch Home Care out for dinner.
We do it because it is a good and fun way for us to spend meaningful time together as a family.
It is good because the children get to work out physically, walking around the city for the walkathons and climbing stairs during flag days. It is good too, because they learn to deal with rejections when people don’t open their doors, avoid them, or say ‘no’ to them.
15Nov12

This was in November 2011, at the iLoveSingapore Walk.
There is one coming up this year, on 13 November 2012.

This was earlier this year, in March.
We were supposed to be running for Touch Young Arrow‘s Run and Raisin.
To ensure that we will be on time, we drove to the venue and slept in the car the night before…
In the end we did not run because it was raining.  We went for breakfast with some friends instead…
It is fun because it really can be lots of fun. For the 2008 National Day Parade, my mum, Elias and I had many KFC meals, Mr Bean soya bean drinks and even ice cream over a few months of rehearsal.
The Singapore Flyer carpark was the holding area and Elias and I spent much time exploring the Singapore Flyer.

Elias also enjoyed himself watching the military police and the acrobatic stilt walkers rehearse.

It is meaningful because the children get to see another aspect of life in Singapore. Samuel felt sad hearing that one old lady whom we visited stayed alone.
We are only adhoc volunteers, although we believe in helping the needy and contributing to society. There are many needs in the society, but we have limited time, energy and resources.
We do what we can, and we have learnt to always stretch ourselves just that little bit more, to help someone else have a better life, or simply to enjoy that little extra moment of joy.
Therefore, we are supporting the upcoming TCS fund-raising event – the Ultimate Hawker Fest!
It will be held on 20 Oct 2012 (Saturday), from 5 – 10 pm at the Millennia Walk where you can sample some of the best Singapore’s hawker food cooked by some of Singapore’s best hawkers and chefs. Visit ieatishootipost to read more about what you can expect!
We are giving away 2 sets of 2 tickets (i.e. 4 tickets in total) to you, our readers, to thank you for your support and to do our part for TCS and the people they support.

  • I love this give-away cuz it is helping others in return, something good must be passed on! Your post also encourage me to look for opportunities to reach out as a family, the lessons learnt are precious! Giving back to the society means not taking things for granted & knowing that we can be part of the solution. I believe It first starts in the home, serving family members, then friends & the community.

  • Wow, I see a super family – having 3 boys and can still do community service and blog! I have 2 boys and already feel like I don’t have much time for myself… I will learn from you Sim Wee.
But having said that, I have my way of giving back to socity – by being a considerate citizen, by taking care of my family, by being kind to my Maid, by being friendly and kind to my neighbours!!

  • I think it’s wonderful that you do community service with your family! I’ve been exploring avenues to do that too with my kids. Giving back to society is, to me, part of the cycle of life that makes the society that we live in a more gracious one. That’s what I hope to teach the kids too.

  • Giving back to society is to do your part without being called upon and expecting nothing in return but the smiles on the faces of those you’ve touched.

  • What a delicious way to give a little back!
To me, giving back to society means praying for the less fortunate, respecting and considering our neighbours .. All wonderfully and beautifully made by God. 🙂

  • Giving back to society is anything that we do it from a heart of genuine concern and a sincere effort of making a difference in our community.Even a simple smile to your neighbours, colleagues and even the person that you always meet when waiting for bus to work, at market, at mrt station etc.
