Singapore Kindness Day 2013

The Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) very kindly gave “A litter at a time” an award on 31 May 2013, at the inaugural Kindness Day SG, in appreciation of our act of kindness.

I am now part of the Kindred Spirit Circle!

Samuel was very thrilled to receive the certificate.
He could not believe that
the beautiful certificate was ours.
“This is for us? They gave it to us?
To our family?”
When it was time for the group photo,
he wanted to be in it as well.
Of course. He is so much a part of
“A litter at a time”.

We had a complimentary boat ride on the VIP boat down Singapore River!

The boys really enjoyed the river cruise.
The city skyline in Singapore at night
is really beautiful.
We spent most of the time on the deck.

What made the night most memorable for me was that we were there as a family.

SKM ceremony as a family

Doing “A litter at a time” has been fun for me, and it is made easier by the support and participation of my family. Although honestly, the only person who is as enthusiastic about it as me, if not more, is Samuel. To Samuel, it is a game, and at his age, it is still cool to be good.

The older boys feel differently about it. Firstly, they do not like getting their hands dirty. Secondly, they worry about what their peers will think. They are willing to pick up litter with me, but it took me all my powers of persuasion and lots of prayer to convince them to starr in my “Singaporean of the Day” video. They were quite worried that their friends would see it, and then tease them about it.

Actually, I find it really, really sad that our children have to fear being laughed at for doing something good. No wonder Singa resigned.

Oh well.

In any case, I was glad that for once, the children were happy to be identified with “A litter at a time”. Thank you, Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM), for showing my children that kindness is still appreciated and applauded.

There is hope, Singapore! Cheer up and chin up! Keep doing good! 🙂
